ELEVEN WOMEN LISTED AMONG CRAIN'S '40 UNDER 40'

AS NEW YORK'S BRIGHTEST YOUNG EXECS'

NEW YORK, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- George Bernard Shaw's observation that youth is wasted on the young certainly doesn't apply to the executives who make up the first Crain's New York Business "40 Under 40" listing in the Feb. 29 issue of the business weekly.

Eleven of some of the brightest, quickest-rising stars of the New York business world are women. Along with their male counterparts they have used their youth wisely and distinguished themselves in the demanding rough-and-tumble world of New York business.

Sophia Collier, at 31, president, co-founder of American Natural Beverage Corp., is the youngest woman on the list that also includes 39-year-old Linda Sanchez, general manager-postmaster of the U.S. Postal Service's Brooklyn district.

Other women moving into the limelight and shaking up the old guard include Ellen Bushkin, 35, director-clinical nursing, Mount Sinai Medical Center; Sherri Baker, 39, president-Erno Lazlo Institute; Jacalyn Barnett, 36, a partner in the Shea & Gould law firm; Rebecca Wesson Darwin, 34, publisher, The New Yorker; Patricia Irvin, 35, partner in the Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy law firm; Lauri Mallet, 39, president-WilliWear/WilliSmith Ltd., fashion; Connie McCann, 33, chief administrative officer-Chemical Consumer Banking; Francine Sommer, 39, president-Gabelli Value Inc., merchant banking fund; and Margery Fischbein, 32, vice president-Shearson, Lehman, Hutton.

TWO 29-YEAR-OLDS LISTED AMONG MEN, YOUNGEST IN GROUP

Paul Sagan, news director of WCBS-TV, and Hylton Phillipson, president-Henry Ansbacher, Inc., the bank specializing in media mergers and acquisitions, both 29, are the youngest executives in the group.

Statistically, Crain's "40 Under 40" encompasses the business world of New York. More than a dozen broad industry sectors are represented.

Not surprisingly, two distinctly New York businesses placed the greatest number of young executives on the list: eight representatives of financial services and six from media and publishing.

Manufacturing/consumer products has six candidates; retail and apparel have four candidates.

Of the 40, ten entrepreneurs are heading successful businesses they began.

The average age of the group is 35. The youngest are 29; the oldest just shy of her 40th birthday.
